Enrique Asin-Garcia – Assistant Professor (Wageningen University and Research)

The Biomanufacturing team (Bioprocess Engineering Chair Group, Wageningen University & Research) works on advancing safe, sustainable, and decentralised bio-based production and biotechnologies by combining advanced synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, digitalisation, bio-hybrid interfaces, and systems thinking. Its research spans iterative Design-Build-Test-Learn (DBTL) cycles, high-throughput strain optimisation, and the development of both conventional and xenobiological strains with enhanced biosafety features, alongside microbial biosensors for real-time monitoring and biointelligent control of fermentation processes. The group applies these approaches to challenges such as environmental pollution sensing, the production of valuable compounds from second- and third-generation feedstocks, and the development of digital twins and automated learning workflows for next-generation biomanufacturing. At the same time, the group embeds Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design, circularity, and responsible research and innovation into its work through stakeholder engagement, multi-actor and transdisciplinary approaches, and the creation of innovation communities that help align technology development with societal needs, policy, education, and resilient value chains for the circular bioeconomy.
