EVENT 2026
Breaking Boundaries: Making Synthetic Biology Accessible and Ready for the Real World
Synthetic biology is moving fast, but access to its tools, knowledge, and benefits is uneven. This meeting focuses on making the field more open, inclusive, and responsible. We will explore questions around access to technologies (such as CRISPR), regulation, and fair use of biotech innovation. By bringing together researchers, industry, policymakers, and students, the event creates space for open exchange and shared reflection. The goal is simple: make synthetic biology not only more advanced, but also more accessible, transparent, and aligned with societal needs.
DATE: 4th June 2026
TIME: 9:30 to 19:00h
LOCATION: Utrecht University
Program
*Each session explicitly addresses one or more Open Science themes through exchange of practices, dialogue, matchmaking, or community building.
9:30 - 10:00: Registration and welcome coffee
Attendees arrive, check in, and network over coffee
Early networking to stimulate connections across academia, industry, policy, and student communities
* We strive to keep participation in the symposium free of charge to maximise accessibility for students, early-career researchers, policymakers, industry representatives, and interested societal stakeholders. External funding is essential to maintain this open and inclusive format
